February 2014 Newsletter

We are happy to announce that our 7th Annual New Taste of the Upper West Side event will be back May 28th-May 31st, 2014. We have a great lineup of incredible chefs, new restaurants, and wonderful hosts. Please check our website, which will be live on February 24th, when we will reveal all the exciting details.

Thanks to our Doe Fund Team

A huge thank you is due to our Ready, Willing, & Able team from the Doe Fund. They worked tirelessly during the recent snow storms to make sure all our crosswalks were cleared of snow and ice, taking many extra steps to clear a wide path and make our sidewalks as safe as possible. We are wondering if they'll get to take a break at all this winter, as the snow seems to just keep coming. In case you didn't know, our men in blue are in a unique and wonderful 18-month program with this not-for-profit company, which teaches them a trade of their choice while they are being paid to clean our streets and sidewalks. Our contract with them is for 7 days/week, and we have now been employing them for 15 years. Next time you see them, you might want to say thanks for the wonderful work they do.

ADA Window Signage Now Available for Merchants & Restaurants

We have launched our Columbus Avenue BID Accessibility Project, and encourage everyone to participate. Small signs for your window are now available to let people know that you have a portable ramp if needed for entry. There's a place for your shop phone number, so that someone can easily notify you that they'd appreciate help accessing the shop. We hope that all shops with a step up for entry will consider getting these ramps, if they don't already have them. Available in many materials, including aluminum and rubber, these threshold doorway wheelchair ramps are not expensive, are lightweight, and plentiful online. Do yourself a favor and avoid hefty fines for being a non-accessible shop or restaurant. We'll be offering the signs to anyone within the Columbus Avenue BID who would like one. Please call or email us if we haven't stopped by your shop.

  NYPD Scam Alert

The Police have asked us to inform you of the following new scam: With the availability of Prepaid Debit Cards, criminals have developed new ways to steal.
  1. A caller informs the victim that they owe back taxes to the IRS and must make immediate payment with a Green Dot Money-Pak.
  2. The victim's family member had a car accident and the caller threatens physical violence unless immediate reimbursement is made with a Green-Dot Money-Pak.
  3. Utility companies demand immediate payment by Green Dot Money-Pak or your electricity or gas will be turned off.

Crime Prevention Tips
  • Be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason.
  • Remember that anyone who has the number on a green Dot Money-Pak card has access to the funds on the card.
  • Never give out personal or financial info to anyone who emails or calls you unsolicited.
  • Never wire money, provide debit or credit card numbers or Green Dot Money-Pak card numbers to anyone you don't know.
  • Utility companies and government agencies will NOT contact you demanding immediate payment by Money-Pak.
