Now Open, @nyhistory : Explore a bygone New York in our newest exhibition, "Lost New York."⁣

We remember the old Penn Station. Renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead, and White designed the Beaux-Arts building for the Pennsylvania Railroad. A 148-foot-high coffered ceiling modeled after ancient Roman baths soared above travelers in the waiting room, while an iron and glass canopy bathed the train platforms in sunlight.⁣

The station opened in 1910 and stood for only 54 years. Its demolition, beginning in 1963, spurred the creation of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission two years later. This commission saved Grand Central Terminal from proposed destruction in 1968.⁣

"Lost New York" speaks to both the dynamism of an ever-changing city and the importance of preserving pieces of our otherwise vanishing past. Visit April 19 through September 29, 2024. ⁣
